Ned Alwyn Eppes was born in August 1883 in Santa Rosa, Mexico while his parents were visiting his mother's parents. He worked first for insurance companies, among these are Williamburg Fire Insurance Co. of Texas and Oklahoma; and later with the Marine Underwriters. During WWI, he was in the construction division of the U.S. Army Engineering, and in September 1918 was living at 326 Madison St. San Antonio, Texas.
Ned was the first manufacturer of white building tile. He then became affiliated with the San Antonio Clay Sewer Pipe Company, so these notes, adding pipes to the company's inventory, date to 1918-1920.
In 1920 Ned moved his family to Houston, Texas, where he built a plant for the manufacture of concrete sewer pipe, and was president of the Gulf Concrete Pipe company. He opened a second plant in Brownsville in 1927 and in August 1929, whilst visiting that city, died of an apparent heart attack, at the age of 46The Brownsville Herald, Monday, 19 August 1929.
In 1926 he had built the first Houston home made from framed concrete. Nowadays, the house, at 5322 Institute Lane, Houston, has a Texas Historical Marker with the inscription “Erected in 1926 in the new Jandor Gardens planned neighborhood for concrete manufacturer Ned. A. Eppes (1883-1929) and his family on land purchased by Linda S. Eppes, this house was among the earliest in Houston constructed of concrete building materials. The Italian renaissance villa-inspired block house features a stucco finish and an elaborate Spanish mission door surround, both unusual until the 1930s”.
