El "2 de Abril"

The “2 de Abril”, named for the date of the victory over the French at Puebla on 2 April 1867, was a grocery owned by Adalberto Catalan. Adalberto was born in 1874. In 1896 he had a grocery store in Chilpancingo which on the night of 23 April was destroyed by fireEl Avisador, Acapulco, 3a Epoca, Núm. 36, 5 May 1896: El Tiempo, Año XIII, Núm. 3,798, 5 May 1896. In 1910 he served on the ayuntamiento of ChiplancingoPeriódico Oficial, 13 April 1910.

Adalberto Catalan had a hacienda in Mazatlán, Guerrero, expropriated by governor General Adrián Castrejón in 1915.

The grocery issued two series of notes. The rubber stamp on the first reads ‘OFICINA [               PES]AS Y MEDIIDAS SULTEPEC’. Sultepec is in the Estado de México, 100 kilometres southwest of Toluca and 250 kilometres north of Chilpancingo.

A second series had changes to the typeface and the name of Herminio Catalan. The rubber stamp on the reverse reads ‘FRANCISCO BRINGAS CORONEL AGENTE DE LIBROS’.
