A 25c note from José Antonio Ruiz of the cacao refinery "La Unión" (Clavo de la Victoria), 20 kilometres south of Villahermosa.
The stamp on the back is dated 12 May 1914 and the note is signed by J. A. Ruiz.

José Antonio Ruiz was from the state of Hidalgo but married Fidencia Sastré, a daughter of Fidencia Fernández Veraud Sastré, who was renowned for refusing to marry Eduardo González Arévalo, the rapacious Spanish invader of Tabasco during the French InterventionCarlos Mario Zurita Pedrero, Historia y Monografía de Jalapa, 2000, p 104. José Antonio Ruiz y Compañía, at the hacienda Santa Rosalía, was the largest producer of aguardiente in Cardenas in the 1890s. |
