$5 notes passed in Canada

In November 1915 the Police Department in Ottawa noticed that $5 notes of El Banco de Londres y México were being circulated in small shops, being passed as if worth $5.00 in Canadian money. Two Italians were arrested and it was learnt that the same Italians had passed a considerable quantity of this money in London, Ontario, operating amongst the Chinese laundrymen and small shops.

Officer Joliat, Inspector of the Detective Department, gave José A. Machado, the Vice-president of the Ottawa branch of the American Bank Note Company, a list of notesone dated 1 May 1906, two dated 2 January 1912, and fourteen dated 1 October 1913, and he contacted the head office. New York responded, on 27 November, that “We are not at all surprised at the fact that some of these notes have reached Canada, since we know there are great quantities of them here. They have been speculated and gambled in for some time past. As a matter of fact we know of two houses here in New York who have been buying all they could obtain and we have been told that everybody coming out of Mexico for the past year or so, or since exchange was in such a deplorable state, have been bringing this bank’s notes into the States. It seems at all times their notes have been at a premium.” On 18 December Charles Blackmore, the Resident Agent in Mexico City, reported that he had taken up the matter with the bank and that Mr. Mitchell, the manager, “does not for a moment hesitate in saying that the people who perpetrated this fraud must have bought or secured the Banco de Londres y Mexico notes in a perfectly legitimate manner, taking advantage of the similarity of the Canadian Bank Notes to pass them off as such. Mr. Mitchell informed me that when he was in Canada he himself notice the similarity of the Mexico and Canadian notes, and that he twice, for a bet, passed off notes issued by the Banco de Londres y Mexico as Canadian notes”ABNC, folder 288, Banco de Londres y México (1909-1915).
